Las Vegas:
American Boomtown
These images were made in the late 1990s for a book called "The Real Las Vegas"
.
In 2005, some of the images were republished in a companion book to the PBS documentary
"Las Vegas : An Unconventional History". A Japanese magazine published an essay of these photos in 1999. See it here, although I have no idea what the Japanese text says.
As you can probably tell from the titles, there is a lot of focus on the "other" Las Vegas: life beyond the strip. It's an interesting subject, considering the volume of crisp.colorful photos of the strip. Vegas is like no other American city, and yet perfectly representats a booming America at the turn of the 21st century. It is a mix of people and a mass of contradictions.
What you make of Vegas largely depends on what you are looking for. It's a city of squandered wealth, where people go to make their fortunes. It's a sprawling mess, and a relief valve for the soaring housing prices in California. While the prosperity misses some, middle class professionals and construction workers can still afford to buy their dream home within the booming suburbs. Immigrants flock to Vegas for the jobs and chance to get ahead. Giant new casinos replace the old worn-out classics. History is bunk, there is only the future. A new reality is being created, much like the faux cities presented by the new line of grandiose theme casinos.
You can find it all in Vegas. If you don't like the way things look, turn around, you'll see things in a whole new light.
